Feijoa Smoothie

Did you know that in some countries the famous feijoa is called a pineapple guava!!

There are many reasons why I love living in New Zealand, and feijoas contribute to this reason. New Zealand has the ultimate climate for growing feijoas organically, feijoas thrive off our weather.

But it is very common for feijoa trees to be planted in a kiwi's backyard, this pear shaped fruit is very unknown to the world. However as time passes the word spreads globally on what a delight these fruits are.

Because feijoas are so common here, many of us think that this fruit originated from New Zealand. But in fact it is a native tree to South America or Argentina. But since feijoas grow rapidly in New Zealand it explains why we are the largest exporter of the fruit.

This fruit has many exotic names to it, pineapple guava, Brazilian guava, fig guava or known in Hawaii as a gravasteen. I think the funniest name is the New Zealand Banana!!

When one of my brothers was in Argentina for a year, around March through to June, he was devouring through the feijoa trees in his neighbourhood in Buenos Aires. He told us a story when he was feasting on these beauties through the autumn months. His brother, Julian was like, what are you doing? Don't eat those? Julian couldn't believe he was eating these obscure fruits. Julian explained to my brother that in Argentina, they don't eat the fruits, they just let them rot on the ground. Julian said they usually just plant feijoa trees for hedges but never eat the fruit.

So unlike in New Zealand, my brother didn't have to fight any siblings for the last feijoa on their breakfast. He could indulge in as many as his hearts contempt.

So now the feijoa season is coming to end, we can feel sorry for the rest of the world that have not experienced the flavourful gem.

This is just many of the ways you can use your left over havest from your feijoa trees. I also have about 5kg of frozen feijoas in the freezer to dehydrate to add to my tropical muesli.

Oh how I love feijoas!! <3

Lets learn how to make this delicatable smoothie!

Begin cutting your feijoas in half.

Using a spoon, scoop out the flesh of the fruit. Don't waste this beautiful fruit.

Add pop in some over riped banana.

Place the lid on the blender and blitz the mixture until smooth.

Add some honey for some sweetness.

The mixture should be smooth and pale in colour.

Pour into some vintage glasses.

Screw on a lid and place a straw into the cup. Enjoy your delicious smothie!
